Poor posture can affect the natural balance of muscular protection for our spinal and other joints. Asymmetry and sagging can put an overstretch on ligaments, and muscles can overwork and tire. Overworked muscles become short and tight and the opposing muscles become longer and weaker. This altered balance may lead to altered stresses at joints, and altered pressures on nerves. Pain and discomfort can arise from any of our soft tissues including the muscles, joints and nerves. In the early stages of postural pains and discomfort, there is often nothing ‘wrong’, it is just that our biomechanics are not working optimally. Pain in this situation is simply a message suggesting we do something. If the problems are not addressed, then these pains and discomfort can become established and difficult to abolish.
