Most acute back and neck pain can be attributed to excessive strain on the spinal joints, ligaments and muscles. This could be due to a prolonged session working in the garden, a very long car journey or painting a ceiling over the weekend. Occasionally joints do get ‘locked up’ or discs may bulge giving rise to debilitating pain and an inability to move freely. Your physiotherapist is best placed to make an accurate initial assessment to determine the exact nature of your problem. Treatment will be specific to your symptoms and may consist of techniques to relieve pain, improve your range of movement or give advice about what to do and what not to do. We also work closely with your GP and are in a position to refer you for further investigation should it become necessary. Physiotherapy also plays a vital part in more chronic back and neck pain. As with acute problems, an initial assessment will determine the nature of the problem. As well as using treatment modalities to address chronic pain your physiotherapist may suggest a tailor made rehabilitation programme to strengthen and ‘re-condition’ your musculoskeletal system. |
